If I am chosen as a National Merit Finalist, in order to receive this scholarship at USC for half-tuition, will I ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO submit my application by December 1? Or will I be able to hold off until the January 15 deadline? I would love to use this time to polish up my applications, but if I need to submit by December 1, it is fine. Thanks!

Oh no...am I done for for USC :(

USC's School of Cinematic Arts - Writing Sample Question

Hey! So I'm applying to USC's school of Cinematic Arts, and one of the requirements involves a writing sample. There's three different options that I'm given for this assignment. The three are -A description of a four-minute film that contains no dialogue. It can be fiction or non-fiction. The story has to be communicated visually. -A dialogue scene between two people. Provide a one-paragraph introduction describing the two characters in screenplay format. (no more than three pages) -Describe a concept for a feature-length movie, fiction or documentary, which you would like to develop. (no more than two pages) The major I'm applying for is film production. I only have experience with editing and directing, none with like screenwriting. My friend said the dialogue scene would most likely be the easiest. My question is, which would/did you do, and if you did the second one is the whole scene only dialogue? or like the characters move locations, can there be pauses. I suck at describing. Okay so imagine this (this isn't my idea it's just an example) two guys are talking about, lets say sports. Then the scene changes to the next day. Can you do that? or does the dialogue have to take place during one period of time with no scene changes. I would call and ask SCA but unfortunately they're closed for thanksgiving. I am aware I shouldn't have waited this long, but I can't go back in time. Thank you!

USC SCA Summer Program?

So I am contemplating doing the USC SCA summer program. I already applied and was accepted for the Beginning Filmmaking class, but I just dont know if I can justify how expensive it is. Has anyone on here taken it before? I would really love to get someones reviews and/or thoughts on the course, what it was like, whether it was worth it, what you learned. I havent been able to find much in terms of reviews and such online, and I would really appreciate it. Thanks!

How does USC feel about retaking F's, having W's and part time student?

Hey guys My first two years of community college I did bad. I've failed a total of six classes, have 4 W's, and every semester in my first two years except for one, I was a part time student. I ended up getting dismissed from community college and sat out a semester. I ended up turning my life around, and after two semesters and two intersessions, I have a 3.6 GPA. This is because I did academic renewal for two classes, which disregards the grades. I also retook the other four classes and got A's in each. I've received two C's, and two B's. Everything else has been A's. All the classes I failed were GE's that had nothing to do with my major, if that makes it any better. The thing I'm worried about is the fact that USC does not recognize the new grades or the academic renewal, which will bring my gpa down. Also the fact that I have a academic dismissal on my transcript hurts me a lot as well. I am at a California CC and want to transfer to Marshall, which I know is super competitive. Will my past failures strongly affect my chances of admission? And also, are there any CSU's/UC's that would take me considering my bad academic past?

GPA:3.5 W:3.85 SAT:1450 ECs: probably my strongest area according to my gear up consoler I am from a very competitive school in Washington. USC is my dream school, however my gpa is below what most people have there. There have been some circumstances which have impacted my grades (both parents had serious forms of cancer throughout my whole high school). Do you think if I explain my circumstances to school it could help my chances? Or is my gpa too low? I have taken 10 AP classes.

So I'm applying as a Chemistry major with a 3.76 (should be around 3.85 by the end of fall). I'm gonna get an A in General chemistry 1 and I'm taking general Chem 2 during the spring semester. I'm also planning on taking calculus 1 for the first time during spring. I've finished 3 or 4 of the GE sections and will have another finished by next semester. Do I have a chance?

Submitted app confirmation question

My D submitted her app via the Common App a couple of days ago. She hasn't received anything from USC confirming. Also when she logs into you.usc.edu there isn't anything about App Status yet even though it's the same email address used to apply. Anyone know how long before USC links your Common App submission with the portal?

I'm in the process of writing my essays, and for the last one (which asks to share your favorite online destination and why) I have a couple ideas but I'm not sure which would be most effective. As you can tell from my username, Reddit is probably the site I visit the most. I was also thinking about writing about one of my favorite Youtube channels, Vsauce. I play this online pool game a lot too, but I don't know if adcoms would like to read about that. Lastly, I am a big football fan, so I visit the nfl website a lot. Which topic do you guys think would be best to write about? Thanks, RedditAddict.

USC Help!!!!

Hi guys! So I'm applying to USC for CS. I don't have a very good SAT score (1270/1600), but I have incredible ECs (I think) that show my inclination towards CS. Would it be a good idea to apply to Dornslife rather than Viterbi? Or can I apply to Viterbi and still be admitted to the college, Dornslife, or Undeclared perhaps?

Self Reported Grade Help

Hi, My application for USC is almost done, but I need help with the section where I report my grades. I only know my final averages, not individual semester grades(my school doesn't even have semesters...), so should I just put my final average in for every semester? Also, does it matter if I enter the grade in number or letter form? Thank you all for your help and best of luck with the admissions process! :)

extremely confused about USC majors/schools

Hey, I'm applying via regular decision to USC, but I have to submit by December 1st in order to compete for some of their scholarships. I'm really confused about how the various schools within USC work and how one could major across them or switch between them. I've known I wanted to do a degree in media studies for a long time, with some sort of minor in poli sci or sociology, and I'm not really sure where that leaves me in terms of the USC application. USC has amazing programs in film studies and in communication, but I'm looking for something somewhat in-between, I guess. I've looked at all the programs that seem relevant to me and the one I liked the sound of the best (based on the courses) was the Cinema and Media Studies program, which is a part of SCA. I also know that, as of now, my eventual goal is to work on the 'business side' of TV, and my dream job would be working as a network executive. Thus, the BCA (Business of Cinematic Arts program) sounds perfect for me in the long-term, but I don't think I want to go to business school, because I don't really have an interest in going into business unless its related to entertainment and I've always pictured myself getting a broader undergraduate education (and maybe getting an MBA later). I like the liberal arts curriculum of Dornsife, but I feel like since I want to go into entertainment, it would be better to do one of the specialized programs USC is known for. To complicate matters even further, I love journalism and though I don't see myself pursuing it as a career, the resources of the Annenberg school are tempting. So...here's where I am as of now: in order to apply for the major that I originally thought I wanted, I have to apply to SCA, which, as we all know, is harder to get into and also has an additional application. To apply for the BCA program, I'd have to apply to Marshall, and I just don't think I want to go to business school as an undergrad. I could apply more generally to Dornsife, but then I might be stuck there. That's where I get confused — is it possible/easy to switch between schools at USC? Say I apply to Dornsife, but then realize I want to go to SCA in my sophomore year. Is that a possibility? USC is one of the largest schools that I'm applying to and it has the most specialized programs, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it is making it difficult for me to know how to apply. Could anyone provide insight or offer advice? I didn't realize my conundrum until recently, and my application, according to my college guidance counselor, should be done within the next five days. Help? *Note: I've already completed most of the USC common app supplement and the writing sample for SCA. All I have left would be the "why USC" question and the SCA statement of intent, but I don't feel like I can write either of those without knowing what I actually want from USC. Thanks in advance for any replies! I'm happy to provide any additional info that could help you help me.

Subject tests at USC?

I am applying at USC as an engineering major. Submitting SAT subject tests is optional but they say they can be helpful for scholarships. I have taken the Physics (800) and the Math Level 2 (740) subject tests. A 740 is fine but is in the 58th percentile and is not exactly impressive within competetive engineering programs. Would it be best for me to only submit the perfect Physics score? Will submitting just one test raise eyebrows? Is it better to provide the college with more information even though the the math score is probably slightly sub-par? Thanks for the input

I have done some research and found a couple of opportunities for undergrad research, but does anyone else have any suggestions?

cGPA: 3.5 wGPA: 4.01 ACT: 31: 34 on Reading, 34 on English, 27 on M, 30 on Science I think my test scores reflect well on my career choices as I plan to go into Communications in college, more specifically Public Relations. I feel if a college sees how well I performed on the English sections of both tests and also sees me applying for their Communications school, it will reflect well. My strength of schedule is probably considered pretty high, I took 3 years of Spanish in middle school and math all the way up to Geometry in middle school as well. In high school all of my classes have either been honors or AP, and after senior year I will have taken 7 APs(NSL, World, Psych, US, Stat, Lang, Lit), earning high marks in all classes, well besides Stat, Lit, and US as those are all senior classes but I am certain I won't get below a B lol. I have a good amount of extracurriculars as well: 2015-2016 Sports Editor of school newspaper 2016-2017 Editor-in-Chief of school newspaper 2015-2016 Vice President of Key Club 2016-2017 President of Key Club 2015-2016 Event Planner for Best Buddies Club 2016-2017 Vice President of Best Buddies Member of 2016-2017 Gay-Straight Alliance Club Member of 2016-2017 National English Honors Society Member of 2016-2017 National Honors Society Member of JV Baseball team in 2013-2014 & 2014-2015 Manager of Varsity Lacrosse team in 2015-2016 Member of Varsity Lacrosse team in 2016-2017 2016-2017 Leader of school's student section, nicknamed the "Maroon Platoon", work with AD and various others to ensure fun for all students at sporting events Member of Co-Ed Varsity Bocce team in 2013-2014 Student Coach of Co-Ed Varsity Bocce team in 2014-2015, 2015-2016, & 2016-2017 -Just a little side note to clarify what exactly the co-ed bocce team is. It is a varsity level team comprised of general education students and special needs students in hopes to create a sense of accomplishment for students who couldn't participate in regular varsity sports, as well as creating unity and friendship between the students. For the three years I was a student coach, I ran the practices, created lineups, coached during games, etc. as well as stayed after school with my players and cultivated a welcoming environment for anyone who wanted to join. Along with those in school extracurriculars I have over 400 hours of documented student-service-learning hours, and countless more undocumented throughout various organizations and community service projects, including a mission trip to Alaska to help the homeless and clean the environment.
